7 Ways to Break Out of a Funk

I think I've been in a bit of a funk lately. Maybe it's the weather change--it's already cold and I'm already unprepared--or the way the end of the semester always seems to sneak up on me no matter what. A big part of it is probably how much I hate not knowing what's coming after this year--and being forced to come to peace with that.

Some of it is probably how, until last weekend, I hadn't seen my mom (who is also the rock of my entire universe) since August. (It was too long to be away from my family (and my puppies!) and too short of a time back together!)

But: it happened. I had the funk.

I think now I'm actually coming out on the other side of it, so I decided to put together a few tips/reminders for myself on what to do when it hits.

1. Sleep

I had to put my 6am alarms on hold for the early part of this week so I could sleep until 8 or 9 before dragging myself out of bed for class. I didn't always get a workout in but it was so worth it.

Over the past three and a half years of college, I've figured out that the sweet spot for my nap time is about 30 minutes--I set a timer and [usually] wake up feeling rested.

2. Workout

This is such a big one for me. I will be in the worst mood, but once I start sweating, it's like I become a new person. That said, don't be afraid to be flexible! I was frustrated with myself for not sticking 100% to the Body Beast plan (that I don't even plan on completing anyway?? Ok, brain.), but yesterday, I took an hour and brought back out the Treadmill Shredmill workout from Blogilates and it was exactly what I needed to get my mind back in the right place and get me back on track.

3. Make a to-do list/brain dump

This is probably just a type A thing, but it makes me feel so good to get some of the thoughts out of my head and just let. them. go.

4. Listen to a Personal Development podcast

Maybe this happens while you're laying down for your nap or while you're at the gym, but sometimes breaking out of your own perspective can help so much. My Beachbody "upline" (our overarching big empire of a team) also does weekly calls that are always so amazing and inspiring and full of love and support and always what I need to hear.

Currently listening to: The Power of Vulnerability by Queen of the Universe, Dr. Brene Brown

5. Confide in your tribe

I can't tell you how many times I've told my friends--especially my friends who are also Inspire Joy coaches--what I'm going through and have them say "ME TOO". Sometimes we share business growing pains, other times it's just feeling 'blah'. Sometimes, they say "oh I felt like that last week--maybe this will help you" before recommending some amazing link/podcast that makes my whole day better.

Side note: if you want to join our team of #girlbosses, we're doing a Holidays challenge! 21 days of accountability and support starting November 30 and running until December 21. If you want in--let me know!

I also love Daily Truths from the Brave Girls Club because sometimes you just need someone to tell you that you can do it!

6. Switch things up!

Sometimes, I just really need a good room rearrange or decor switch. This week, I added Christmas lights to my room and it has absolutely changed my life. LOVE THEM. ($3/strand at Lowe's. Best $6 I've spent in a while.)

7. Remember what drives you

Maybe it's time to reconnect with something that you're passionate about. Maybe you've forgotten to fuel your fire for a while. Take a step back, take a deep breath, reconnect, jump back in.
